… Our government and our media have done a great job of associating cash with crime, right down to putting neighbor against neighbor. I live in a city that prides itself on having a great variety of restaurants advertising ” The Best Cuban Sandwich in Town.” Recently I discovered one near my house that had outstanding reveiws online except one minor quibble that a few people had.: the restaurant does not accept debit or credit cards or any other form of electronic payment. It’s cash only. This review from one experienced restaurant reviewer jumped out at me : “There is nothing more annoying than going to an establishment and them telling you they only take cash … stop scaming [sic] the government and pay your taxes like every other business does … ” Apparently, it didn’t occur to the reviewer that there might be legitimate reasons for not accepting cards. Card processors take a roughly 3 % bite out of every transaction plus an additional 30 cents or so. That adds up quickly if you have a large number of transactions of less than ten dollars as a small sandwich shop might have. Credit card fraud is another reason to shy away from plastic. Or perhaps the owner just doesn’t like supporting the big credit lenders who charge exorbitant interest and fees to consumers and who are rapidly sucking people into slavery debt.
