For SHITS & GIGGLES let us suppose that during the last phase of the Industrial Revolution that it was Z social engineering and deployment of consumerism that fueled Capitalism. In fact it is the necessary engine of accumulation of wealth. Before consumerism the common man would only purchase, buy, “consume” what he needed. In that culture or environment it is/was impossible to create an economic industrialized society because it is impossible to accumulate Capital hence impossible to accumulate wealth. Because the intent of Capitalism is to accumulate enough wealth in order to use it as economic leverage. So, for example, Edward Bernays Sigmund Frued’s nephew, made a career of shaping public opinion [ psychological manipulation ] – what Bernays did was work on the common man who would only purchase, buy, “consume” what he needed and had the common man [ as well as his wife and children & the entire society ] begin to identify their “natural state of being” with the consumerist material world. They achieved this goal when peoples wants, generally, became perceived as needs. When the manipulators or P.R men such as Bernays achieved this goal people began to buy what they wanted and that fueled Capitalism and a main stream of the accumulation of Capital was unleashed. Unfortunately in creating people who perceive their wants to be needs we fuel narcissism.
My suggestion or supposition is that since we have entered the Fourth Industrial Revolution there needs to be a new mode to engine this new Industrial Revolution. Consumerism wont cut it anymore. I will state today that the new mode or engine to replace CONSUMERISM which fueled CAPITALISM is GENOCIDE – GENOCIDALISM which is fueling STAKE HOLDER CAPITALISM or rather the TECHNOCRACY.
